Preta Gil (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈpretɐ ˈʒiw], born August 8, 1974) is a Brazilian singer and actress. She is the daughter of Gilberto Gil, a famous musician and former Minister of Culture in Brazil.

In 1974, the father of Preta Gil, the famous singer Gilberto Gil, went to a government office to register his daughter's name after the name of the baby's paternal grandmother. Upon arriving there, the clerk apparently told him, "You will not be able to register "Preta" as the name of your daughter. Gilberto Gil began to protest and said, "But why not? There's Bianca (White), Blanca (White), Clara (Clear) and Rosa (Rose) . . . why can't Preta (Black) be a name?". Conceding, the clerk said, "Okay, I'll let you register "Preta" as the child's name, but you can only do so if you register it together with a Catholic name". So today, the actress is called "Preta Maria" on account of the clerk, and she thinks own body all good.
Preta lived in Rio until she was a year old, and then she went to Salvador. Her mother soon after had another daughter named "Maria". Preta says she found little creative to tell the truth. She had an older brother, "Pedro", who was born in London, at the time of exile. Her father, Gilberto Gil, was exiled along with Caetano Veloso during the time of the Brazilian dictatorship.
